Extract

This booklet looks at training and behaviour issues affecting the family dog, in particular the relationship between dogs and children.

Research shows that the majority of dog bite injuries to children occur at home or in a neighbour’s home, the culprit being the family pet.

I explain some of the general types of behaviour problems commonly encountered in pet dogs - fear, aggression and unruliness.

There are details on how to go about dealing with some specific behaviour which could cause a problem for children - for example, jumping up, excessive mouthiness, biting, chasing and over-possessiveness.

The booklet also discusses the risk factors associated with dogs and children, firstly when you introduce a new baby, secondly in the toddler stage and thirdly with older children. I give you training and management strategies for each of these situations, as well as canvassing the hard choice of euthanasia when the risks are too great.

Review by Barbara Brill

I must confess, I dashed immediately to 'Dogs and Children' because there's such a tremendous need for a book on this topic. Quite simply, it's top notch. I was absolutely astounded that anyone could pack so much helpful and essential information into 82 pages. This book belongs in every family home.
