Richard considers getting a rescue dog

Hi Kaye,

Yesterday I cruised through some 'rescue' sites off your link. I learnt about foster homes, and that they sometimes have pups and sometimes have trainers assessing and reorganising behaviour.

A few things have occurred to me. It may be possible to get a fun trainable pup without having to re-mortgage my house. I might even be able to get a 'blend' character dog with good training characteristics from farm dog breeding. These ‘rescue’ places may be well resourced with experienced trainers who would take sufficient interest  in our collaboration to test pups for me. This sort of dog could be ‘on trial’ fairly easily without serious financial risk  and there is a very good likely hood we could find it a good home if it didn’t have what it takes for my job.

I’ve also been imaging having a new dog here. I do love having a dog on my lap. One I can take everywhere easily would be fun (possibly sometimes on my interstate teaching trips). Some airlines allow them in the luggage weight allowance. I think 16 inches is an ideal size. No pure breed has come up as ideal. Poodles are hard to find, very high maintenance and the common colours, black and white,  are unsuitable for my shows and pictures for your book.

It may well be fun, if I turn out to be any good at it, to get a dog into some screen work. I’d love to do the same with my horses. Farm dog types would appear to be more saleable although I guess every cowboy’s got one.

I’m thinking of drafting a letter, preferably with your input and sending it to all the rescue agencies to see what turns up. What do you think?
Cheers,

Richard
